HOW HAVING YOUR CARPETS AND UPHOLSTERY CLEANED HELP PROTECT YOU AGAINST CORONAVIRUS? (COVID-19)
The NHS recommends that steam cleaning your carpets, upholstery, curtains and mattresses will help effectively protect you and your family from coronavirus, as it prevents germs from spreading.
Your carpet may not be something you regularly touch with your hands, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t exempt from harvesting viruses. As people cough, sneeze or talk they release a spray which becomes attached to the carpet fibres as the spray falls to the floor. Viruses are also carried in via the soles of people’s shoes, as they carry in substances harvesting germs. How long COVID-19 will stay infectious on surfaces depends on the temperature, humidity and the porosity of the surface it exists on. The lifespan on surfaces, such as carpet, is still unknown, however, similar viruses such as SARS and MERS can survive anywhere from 2 hours to 9 days. With other virus strains, such as Norovirus, living for 12 days on a carpet, even with regular vacuuming.
If you have your carpet professionally cleaned, proven methods will be used to create an inhospitable environment for infectious viruses, with steam cleaning being one of the most effective, due to the use of high temperatures. There is research supporting the use of this practice following an outbreak, and as already mentioned, it is supported as an effective control by the NHS.
